Over Ply Wood x Ratbite zine

Over Ply Wood zine cover image Ratbite retrospective

With the release of the Over Ply Wood dvd just round the corner I thought it would be a good idea to make a zine to go with it. I asked Twiss if he would be up for doing a collaboration and he was well up for it…he is over in Australia so its been a bit of talking over the net combined with good old fashioned cut, paste and post. Twiss put his artwork for Ratbite 17 together with photocopies, printouts and glue and mailed it over to me in Wales. Our idea was to make 2 zines in one and print them back to back. My portion is an A to Z of Over Ply Wood from old photos I was given and lent to make the film to photographs I have taken on recent skate trips with Team Boyo, there are clippings, articles, posters and images from the making and showing of the film. I am sending the master of the film off today to be printed up into 500 copies of Over Ply Wood….a scary moment as the whole project is self made and self financed….I have relied on the generosity of all the contributors over the 3 years it has taken me to make the film. Now i’m hoping I can get enough people to buy the zines and dvds to cover the cost of putting the whole project together….maybe I should have approached some energy drink companies to get the dough but then again who needs big business?! Do it yourself….I hope it works!!

Over Ply Wood exhibition

2 Jul

The exhibition went off in Mumbles last week…..I spent the Monday (16th June) with Jamie and Jon Jones setting up in the gallery. Jamie painted the Over Ply Wood text up onto one of the gallery walls and I hung the rest of the show….plenty of framed photographs and magazines which were easy to put up, a couple of Ramprockers and pre 70’s boards lent by Simon Main….Furr skateboards lent a couple of their excellent new boards and Dan lent his Welsh Tommy Crayon board so the boards pretty much covered the entire history of skateboarding with a local flavour of course…..Tomsk lent a snapped Steve Caballero that appeared on the cover of Edge Magazine in the late 80’s…snapped by Twiss down at Langland in fact. Jack Kirtley did an awesome drawing comic book style of the Rotherslade ramp story from the film. I had 2 display cases made, one of which contained a good stack of 70’s artefacts….a Dave Friar elbow pad kindly lent be Phil Rees, a sew on patch from Skate City in London and a pile of books and magazines from the craze days…..hopefully the pictures show most of the material on show. Thanks for all the loans, time spent and amazing help from everyone…..Tomsk, Greg, Frenchy, Jamie, Simon Main, Jon Jones, Jack Kirtley, Exist skatepark, Phil Rees, Sean who made the cases, Kerry Evans for the framing and advice, Ceri Roberts, Oriel Bach, Zac at Crossfire for some great publicity. Everyone who came down to see the exhibition…..more soon!!

Little Ladies #2: Ione Atkinson, 6yrs

20 Apr

GIRL SKATE UK

Ione Atkinson is just 6 years old and already killing it on a skateboard! We first heard about Ione through her dad’s instagram account, we have been following Jono (jonozero1) for a while now and are stoked with the regular skate updates from Ione.
Always up for an adventure, she recently did a tour of the London skateparks and by the looks of the footage above she had a rad time, she even chose her own music for it!

We think Ione is super cool so we got in touch with Jono for the low down!

ionepadsIt turns out that Ione has been around skateboarding all of her life, Ione’s first board was given to her when she was just two years old and she spent her time sitting and rolling around on it from then on. Ione has been standing on her board for around a year and has picked up…

Screening at The Park Inn, Mumbles. 22nd January 2014.

Park screening poster
I thought the screening at the Park Inn in Mumbles would be a low key event, a good chance to watch the film on the big screen again and figure out any changes I might need to make ahead of getting the dvd made. The Park is a cosy little pub in the backstreets of Mumbles, a real ale pub that is more terraced house living room than spacious lager hall. Kev is the owner and barman at The Park and thats the way he likes it….a great selection of ales and a cosy space that has made The Park extremely popular with the locals and visitors alike. We organised it to be on a Wednesday night so it would be nice and quiet and the film which was planned to take over one side of the pub wouldn’t interrupt the regulars. Kev is a skater as well as a publican so he was keen to see the film and it was a good excuse to get his friends into the pub midweek.
Audience by Simon
As it quickly turned out the screening was the most popular of the four I have done with the film. The place filled up at the advertised 8pm….we had to shift all the furniture out to make room for everyone and still there was no room! There were people in the street watching through the window at one point. It was more like a gig than a film screening.
Con and crowd
As with a gig the sound failed miserably for the first few minutes as I neglected to test the p.a. before starting the film. Mark saved the day with his musical knowledge and stuck the cable from the dvd player in the right socket! Nice one Mark! The volume was finally high and in both speakers and the film rolled.

The room was getting hot and the ale was flowing and everyone was getting into the film. Plenty of faces from the film were there from all periods of Swansea skate history…Griff who is in the poster for the night heard about the film and came along. The photograph was him skating at The Hollywood bowl in Gorseinon in the 70’s….the film has plenty of photos and film from the 70’s. We had Con’s ramprocker borrowed from Tom at Exist so everyone was stoked to have a look at that too.

The film was coming to an end and about 8 minutes before the end the technology failed and the dvd player gave up…not sure if it was the heat or the dvd player or the dvd itself but we couldn’t get it started again! Quickly got the raffle draw going to take the heat off the minor disaster of the missing end of the film……

Loads of great prizes were donated so a lot of people went home with something ranging from an awesome signed and framed photograph of the Bones Brigade at Morfa by Phil Rees to clothes donated by Ric at Exist and a pile of t-shirts from Jason to an original painting by Simon Dark and a stack of wine and spirits from Kev at the pub!!
Thanks to this huge generosity and a whip round organised by Kev I made enough money to get the film audio professionally mixed at Rhondda Street Studios in Swansea and still have change to add to the dvd production fund…Thanks everyone who came down and supported the film!!! What a night, my favourite screening yet!Morfa print comp
Thanks to Simon Dark for taking photos on the night and special thanks to Kev at the Park, Phil Rees for the amazing photograph, Ric, Tomsk and Greg for equipment loans and everyone who came along, bought raffle tickets and gave money. Until the next time……
