Over Ply Wood exhibition

2 Jul

The exhibition went off in Mumbles last week…..I spent the Monday (16th June) with Jamie and Jon Jones setting up in the gallery. Jamie painted the Over Ply Wood text up onto one of the gallery walls and I hung the rest of the show….plenty of framed photographs and magazines which were easy to put up, a couple of Ramprockers and pre 70’s boards lent by Simon Main….Furr skateboards lent a couple of their excellent new boards and Dan lent his Welsh Tommy Crayon board so the boards pretty much covered the entire history of skateboarding with a local flavour of course…..Tomsk lent a snapped Steve Caballero that appeared on the cover of Edge Magazine in the late 80’s…snapped by Twiss down at Langland in fact. Jack Kirtley did an awesome drawing comic book style of the Rotherslade ramp story from the film. I had 2 display cases made, one of which contained a good stack of 70’s artefacts….a Dave Friar elbow pad kindly lent be Phil Rees, a sew on patch from Skate City in London and a pile of books and magazines from the craze days…..hopefully the pictures show most of the material on show. Thanks for all the loans, time spent and amazing help from everyone…..Tomsk, Greg, Frenchy, Jamie, Simon Main, Jon Jones, Jack Kirtley, Exist skatepark, Phil Rees, Sean who made the cases, Kerry Evans for the framing and advice, Ceri Roberts, Oriel Bach, Zac at Crossfire for some great publicity. Everyone who came down to see the exhibition…..more soon!!

Steve Douglas’s Go For It! Skateboard Magazine-The Final Episode????

30 Sep

The process of putting together a documentary covering such a long time span has led to me building up an archive of material. The film is full to the brim with photographs, articles, film and video but there is still a huge pile of material which for various reasons can’t be included in the film. Partly because of time constraints and partly because the film is entirely Swansea based. In a pile of zines a borrowed from Tomsk, some of which have been reproduced here and on the facebook page I found this….Go For It! put together by Steve Douglas in the early 80’s. I asked Steve if I could reproduce the zine in full on this blog and naturally he said “Go For It!!” So thanks Steve and thanks Tomsk for getting things going in the 80’s and keeping it all rolling today.

Morfa location….new evidence!

10 May

“The telegraph pole”….the telegraph pole that was behind the ramp on road side seems to be the only landmark left standing. It has outlasted the ramp, the factory, the stadium….all of it. Wonder how much longer it can make it?

The location of Morfa ramp discovered

9 May

I have been using all my powers of deduction to find the exact location of Morfa ramp. Looking at it today it’s hard to imagine Morfa was once the home of U.K. vert skating. A huge carpark and a very bland retail park that could be anywhere with no hint of the skateboard history that went down there between 1988 to 1992 (roughly). Using Google earth and comparing it with the photographs, video and magazines I have I think I have got a rough thereabouts spot…please feel free to help me be more accurate. The red rectangles represent the vert ramp on the left and the mini on the right. The satellite image shows the Addis factory but Google earth has updated more recently so the warehouses have all gone. Morfa ramp locationBod Morfa Skateboard! September 1989

I’m going down there tomorrow to see if I can find any old Hot Tuna banners or R.A.D. stickers!!

West Cross vert ramp contest, May 1987.

West Cross opening article

Trawler at West Cross
A quick post as I recently had another contribution. This time it was a good stack of great photographs taken at the West Cross ramp at the E.S.A. contest that was held in May 1987. The photographs were taken by Nick Tallis and add to the video and pictures I already have from the event. The photo is of Trawler skating in the contest and the news clipping was given to me by Frenchy who is in the photo in the article too. Thanks everyone who has contributed so far, slowly coming together!!
